Amalfi, an enchanting city

Founded by the Romans, Amalfi in the ninth century became the first maritime republic and contender for  domination of the Mediterranean to the other powers, Genoa, Pisa and Venice. In the eleventh century Amalfi reached its maximum splendor, followed shortly after its fall, with the conquests of the Normans before and the looting of the Pisans later. In 1343, a tidal wave triggered by a storm destroyed much of the city.

The points of interest of Amalfi are many, one of its main attractions is the Cathedral of Sant ‘Andrea di Amalfi, dedicated to the patron saint of the city, in full Arabian and Sicilian style, the cathedral is flanked by various other churches and an overlap of various churches from different eras, so it should be considered a complex. The  city also has a rich history connected to the paper industry, Amalfi is world renowned for high quality paper produced using medieval techniques , in the city there is the paper museum, a unique place where you can discover the tradition of the precious paper of Amalfi. Every year, as usual, a crew of Amalfi rowers participates in the traditional regatta of the ancient maritime republics, against the arms of Venice, Pisa and Genoa.
